Americans believe that we are an exceptional people. In some cases, this is true. But when Obama said in 2009 that other peoples believe they are exceptional as well, he was widely condemned by the right for his disbelief in "American exceptionalism." Obama was right. In fact, "exceptionalism" can be found throughout history, the most conspicuous example being Pericles's "Funeral Oration' from the 5th century B.C. He wanted to "make Athens great again," the same type of rhetoric that catapulted Trump to victory in 2016. I discuss Pericles and exceptionalism in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.
