Supernatural: Everybody Hates Hitler (8x13) | Recap & Lore

Season 8 Episode 13 Published 1 year, 1 month ago
Description

Supernatural Season 8, Episode 13, Everybody Hates Hitler recap đź—ż Nazi necromancers, a very tall and very frustrated golem, and the boys finally move into the Men of Letters bunker, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Henry’s puzzle box from As Time Goes By unlocks the boys’ new home base. Then a rabbi spontaneously combusts in Pennsylvania, and the trail leads to the Thule Society: Nazi necromancers who’ve been bringing their dead back for decades. It also leads to the rabbi’s grandson Aaron (Adam Rose) and the 6'9" clay protector (John DeSantis) he has no idea how to control.

Episode Highlights:

  • Belarus, 1944: a soldier who should have stayed with the shoemaker’s daughter, and a shadow that shrugs off bullets
  • Berly mistakes a necromancy spell for a demon conference call
  • The bunker’s art deco railings, a card catalog, a bar cart, and amazing water pressure (Dean approves)
  • “We found our Bat Cave”
  • A rabbi who laughs while he burns from the inside out
  • Aaron flirts with Dean at the bar, and Dean very slowly takes back his badge
  • “That would explain why there’s something on my shoe”
  • A 6'9" tail in the bushes, and the Impala loses yet another window
  • The golem’s complaints (Aaron “dines on swine”), and the instruction manual Aaron smoked because it had perfect rolling papers
  • A blow dart that bruises purple, and the most painful trip down the library stairs ever

Written by Ben Edlund and directed by Phil Sgriccia, so no wonder it’s this adorable. Berly adored Aaron and the golem’s odd-couple dynamic, and she wants to read a rom-com alternate universe about them. She’s also glad the show broke lore and let the golem talk. LA loved how much Jewish tradition and real history went into it (yes, the Thule Society was real). Both hosts love the bunker and hope it’s home base for a long time. The gore is light: a pair of very precise headshots and rivers of blood in the cold open. Berly’s spinoff wish: an episode about the day Aaron opened his grandpa’s package.

In the lore segment, LA tells the legend of the Golem of Prague. In 1590, Rabbi Loew, the Maharal, molded a man out of clay from the Vltava River and brought it to life with a shem placed in its mouth. Yossele did chores by day and guarded the ghetto at night, without ever eating, drinking, or resting. The rabbi removed the shem every Sabbath, until the one Friday he forgot and the golem went on a rampage. To this day, Psalm 92 is sung twice at Prague’s Old New Synagogue, where the golem’s remains supposedly rest in the attic. LA’s request: someone get this golem new clothes. He’s been wearing the same outfit since 1944.

“Grandparents, mom, dad, truckload of cousins, the whole family was lousy for it. But we never had a golem.” – Dean
