Story Transcript:

Et: Maarika seisis haigla ukse ees.
En: Maarika stood in front of the hospital door.

En: The autumn wind was playing with the leaves, turning them into a dance of red and golden hues.

Et: Maarika tundis hirmu südames.
En: Maarika felt fear in her heart.

En: Her grandmother was here, her dear grandfather.

Et: Haiglaruum oli väike ja hämar.
En: The hospital room was small and dim.

Et: Maarika astus vaikselt sisse.
En: Maarika stepped in quietly.

En: Grandfather Leelo, whom Maarika loved so much, lay in bed, his head on the pillow.

En: Maarika noticed the light coming from the window falling at the foot of the bed, where there was a large and colorful crocheted blanket.

Et: Maarika süda tõmbus soojaks.
En: Maarika's heart warmed.

Et: Ta istus voodiserval, haarates vanaisa käest kinni.
En: She sat on the edge of the bed, grabbing her grandfather's hand.

Et: "Kuidas sa ennast tunned, Vanaisa?"
En: "How are you feeling, Grandfather?"

Et: küsis ta murelikult.
En: she asked worriedly.

En: "Better, because you are here," he replied with difficulty.

Et: Maarika heitis pilgu jahedale haiglatoale.
En: Maarika glanced around the chilly hospital room.

En: The autumn outside was hard to feel; inside, there was only the smell of sterilizing agents.

Et: Maarika hingas sügavalt sisse, püüdes end tugevaks teha.
En: Maarika took a deep breath, trying to make herself strong.

En: The family had said that Maarika should go home and rest.

Et: Kuid Maarika südames ei olnud rahu.
En: But Maarika's heart was not at peace.

Et: Ta ei tahtnud lahkuda, mitte veel.
En: She did not want to leave, not yet.

Et: Öö saabudes otsustas Maarika jääda.
En: As night fell, Maarika decided to stay.

En: She found a chair for herself and curled up on it, eyes closed.

En: She knew she had to talk about her fears and regrets that she had carried in her mind for years.

Et: "Vanaisa," sosistas Maarika.
En: "Grandfather," Maarika whispered.

Et: "Ma kardan, et jään ilma sinust.
En: "I’m afraid I’ll lose you.

Et: Ja ma kardan, et me ei lepi ära."
En: And I’m afraid we won't make amends."

En: Leelo opened his eyes and looked at Maarika.

En: For a moment, there was silence, only the faint hum of machines.

Et: Siis, vaikselt, Leelo ütles: "Maarika, elu on lühike.
En: Then, quietly, Leelo said, "Maarika, life is short.
