Description
Have you ever felt God stir your heart to take action? The Israelites can relate!
As we kick off our Ezra Bible study, after 70 years in captivity, God is stirring the hearts of a generation raised on stories of the Promised Land. He's calling them back to Jerusalem, a difficult 900-mile walk, to rebuild a Temple they’ve never even seen before.
In Ezra 1-2, we hear the true story of how God moves the heart of a Persian king to send His people home. It’s an exodus foretold by Jeremiah and prophesied by Isaiah, down to the very name of the king 150 years before his birth!
In our Ezra 1–2 Bible study, we cover:
- [7:12] A Pattern Worth Knowing: In the Israelites’ perpetual cycle of hope and disappointment, why God provides the hope, and the people provide the disappointment.
- [8:19] Imperfect Leaders: Why even the best leaders in Ezra and Nehemiah can't finish what they started, and how that reveals our need for a Messiah.
- [17:55] The Hand of God: How God moves quietly through non-believing world leaders to orchestrate freedom and provide resources for His people, and why He still moves mountains today through ordinary decisions and willing hearts.
- [21:53] The Second Exodus: How God makes it possible for a generation born in captivity to pack up their lives and walk 900 miles back to a home they’ve never seen.
- [30:35] A List of Who’s Who: Why Ezra's meticulous roll call of returning families matters more than you'd think, including one name carrying the literal bloodline of Jesus.

Group Discussion Questions for Ezra 1–2
- [18:27] God raises up leaders and directs history, equipping us all to join the story. What gifts, passions, or life experiences has God equipped you with right now, and where might He be calling you to step into the story?
- [19:21] God doesn't just want us to learn His Word. He also wants us to respond to what we learn. What is one truth or Scripture verse you’ve learned recently that God might be prompting you to actively respond to or put into practice this week?
- [30:35] Chapter 2 isn’t just a list of names. It is a chosen list of people God called to do the difficult work of rebuilding. What emotions does it bring up when you consider that God intentionally created you specifically to live in this place and time? How does it feel to know you were on His list as Chosen long before you were even born?
