In modern conflict, starvation isn’t only a by-product; it can be deliberately engineered by depriving civilians of “objects indispensable to survival” (food, water, agriculture, fuel, medical supplies). International law expressly bans this. Under Additional Protocol I, Article 54 to the Geneva Conventions, “starvation of civilians as a method of warfare is prohibited,” including attacks on food systems and blocking relief.
