Description
Supernatural Season 8, Episode 12, As Time Goes By recap 🕰️ A man in a three-piece suit falls out of the boys’ motel closet asking for John Winchester, and a very well-dressed Knight of Hell follows him, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
In 1958, a member of a secret society (Gil McKinney) flees a massacre with a mysterious box and blasts through a blood sigil into 2013. He lands in the boys’ motel room. His name is Henry Winchester, and he has a lot of opinions about hunters. Plus, a four-star Podcast Addict review from Rob B that says, in its entirety: “Funny.”
Episode Highlights:
- Normal, Illinois, 1958: a three-piece suit, a tie pin, and a goodbye to a sleeping little boy
- A ballroom-ready Josie (Alaina Huffman), a creep in a robe, and a man bleeding from the eyes
- Henry’s Houdini handcuff trick, and “I guess the Mayans were wrong”
- A very gentle holy water test, and the boys’ sensitivity training on breaking bad news
- Henry calls hunters “apes,” and his grandsons are not impressed
- The Men of Letters’ old headquarters is now a comic book store, and Henry asks to borrow a walkie-talkie
- Abaddon’s “show me what you saw” smoke trick, and Dean checking out the clerk (Abaddon noticed)
- Henry’s sleeping spell works very well on the shopkeeper
- A plan hatched in the Impala, and a showdown at an abandoned plant
Written by Adam Glass and directed by Serge Ladouceur, his first time in the director’s chair after years as the show’s director of photography. Both hosts loved Henry. Gil McKinney nails the dialogue, and he’s believable as a less rugged Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Alaina Huffman’s Abaddon is fabulous and full of menacing delight, though Berly thinks the scream gets used one time too many. The gore is light: bleeding eyes, slit throats, and one very unpleasant gut situation. Berly also has one question: why didn’t anybody call Cas?
In the lore segment, Berly skips the secret societies (The Tipsy Exchange already covered the Illuminati and the Freemasons) and takes on wormholes, with help from an astrophysicist’s explainer on Astronomy.com. Picture a tunnel through a mountain instead of a long trip around it, except the tunnel cuts through space-time, so you could pop out earlier or later than you went in, like Henry. Einstein’s equations allow wormholes, but they might collapse under their own gravity without “negative energy.” Scientists didn’t accept black holes at first either, and the term wasn’t coined until 1967. Scientists, just go talk to Henry Winchester.
“Tell you what, when one of us falls out of your closet, then you can ask the questions.” – Sam
