Roy Albert DeMeo (born September 7, 1940, in Brooklyn) was a feared American mobster who led the so-called "DeMeo crew," a ruthless cell within the Gambino crime family in New York City. Originally involved in loansharking and car theft, DeMeo formed a highly organized and violent group of around twenty associates who engaged in murder, drug trafficking, theft, pornography, and prostitution. They became infamous for their grotesque “Gemini Method”—a highly methodical process of executing and dismembering victims in the back room of the Gemini Lounge, wrapping body parts in bags, and dumping them in remote locations, leaving little trace behind. The crew is associated with up to 200 murders, many carried out by DeMeo himself.
By the early 1980s, DeMeo’s violent methods and the massive number of killings had attracted intense law enforcement scrutiny—and turned him into a liability for the Gambino leadership. In January 1983, amid escalating investigations, Gambino boss Paul Castellano reportedly ordered DeMeo’s execution. He was lured to a meeting in Canarsie, Brooklyn, and was fatally shot—allegedly by members of his own crew, Joseph Testa and Anthony Senter—at the behest of Castellano and organized by Frank DeCicco. DeMeo’s bullet-ridden body was found days later in the trunk of his Cadillac, frozen in a parking lot.
