In 1957, the murder trial of L. Ewing Scott made American legal history. Scott was accused of murdering his wealthy wife, Evelyn Throsby Scott, who mysteriously disappeared from their Los Angeles home in 1955.Using circumstantial evidence, prosecutors built a case arguing that Evelyn was dead and that her husband was responsible for her disappearance. Scott was ultimately convicted of murder, making the case a landmark example of how prosecutors could secure a murder conviction even without recovering the victim’s remains. The case helped demonstrate that a missing body does not necessarily prevent a murder prosecution. Instead, investigators can rely on a combination of physical evidence, suspicious behavior, financial motives, witness testimony and other circumstantial evidence to establish that a homicide occurred.
