Episode Details

Archery elk season is here, and it’s time to lock in your strategy. I sat down with Jace Bauserman to break down his article in North American Elk magazine: “Go Deep or Stay Close.”

We dive into the tough choices every elk hunter faces and the factors that separate success from tag soup:

   •   Backcountry vs. Frontcountry: The pros and cons of hiking deep versus hunting closer to the road.

   •   Pressure vs. Opportunity: How hunting pressure shifts elk behavior and what that means for your setup.

   •   Calling Strategies: Why bugling can be dynamite in one scenario and deadly in another.

   •   Gear & Pack Weight: How to balance speed, stealth, and the ability to pack out an elk.

   •   Timing the Hunt: Why early-season patterns and mid-September rut action demand different approaches.

   •   Access & Terrain: Using topography, trailheads, and overlooked pockets to your advantage.

   •   Mental Toughness: Staying disciplined when the plan requires patience—or a full send into the backcountry.

Whether you’re a seasoned elk hunter or heading out for your first September with a bow in hand, this episode will help you refine your game plan and maximize your chances for success.
