Supernatural: LARP and the Real Girl (8x11) | Recap & Lore

Season 8 Episode 11 Published 1 year, 2 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 8, Episode 11, LARP and the Real Girl recap ⚔️ Charlie is a queen, Dean is in full costume, and LARPers are dying in very real ways on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

An accountant is torn apart by invisible horses, and a LARPer bleeds from every orifice. Both victims play in Moondoor, a live-action fantasy world, and its beloved queen happens to be the boys’ favorite hacker, Charlie. She’s not thrilled to see them, since Winchesters mean monsters. Plus, a shout-out to the Facebook page Family Don’t End with Blood, which found the show by accident and gave it a glowing review.

Episode Highlights:

  • Ed the accountant gets quartered by invisible horses (blood splooge #65)
  • A mustachioed sheriff who’s happy to let the FBI handle the weird stuff: “Kids these days with their texting and murder”
  • Lance’s very powerful mage, a duel of “unmagic wands,” and blood splooge #66 all over the two-way mirror
  • Boltar the Furious clocks the fake FBI badges immediately
  • Queen Charlie’s dramatic helmet reveal, and her face when she sees the boys
  • Dean goes from mocking LARPers to wearing full costume (and leaving the crown on)
  • A flirty elf in the tech tent shoots her shot with Sam (Berly has a headcanon)
  • Charlie gets her “I’m just a girl” moment with a stag-skulled figure, and Dean shows the orcs his real gun
  • A Braveheart speech, Sam in face paint (still hot, unfairly), and a battle for the ages
  • Written by Robbie Thompson, who also gave us Charlie’s debut, so of course he brought her back

LA loved Dean and Charlie’s friendship. They click instantly, and Dean is so protective of her. Berly loved the elf in the tech tent, who wasn’t necessary at all but was a great touch. The hosts were impressed by the whole Moondoor setup and want to go creep on some real LARPers. They’d also absolutely watch a fairy tribunal spinoff. The gore award goes to Lance’s death, with the hobbled woman close behind.

In the lore segment, LA builds on the Irish fairy lore from Clap Your Hands If You Believe, with a USA Today piece on fairy origins. Centuries ago, fairies were thought to be vindictive and powerful, and travelers left offerings for safe passage and good weather. The Cherokee of North Carolina told of the Yunwi Tsunsdi, the “little people,” who helped humans but punished disrespect. In Orkney, Scotland, fairies were short, wore dark gray, and sometimes wore armor. Then LA offers tips from Away with the Fairies on attracting fairies to your home: a fairy house, twinkle lights, soft music, foxglove and thyme, little offerings, and never, ever disturbing a mushroom circle. Don’t be a creep and summon one against her will.

“What? I can’t shut this down. It’s good to be queen.” – Charlie
