It was a HUGE Week 1 win for the Miami Hurricanes in a straight-up fist fight with Notre Dame. And while we struggled in the fourth quarter, the defense came up big when it counted most and the kicking game delivered. So we start by recognizing Carter Davis who hit a HUGE kick to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, after we spent the week a little afraid of what the kicking game was going to look like. What an ending!
There are a lot of props (and critiques) to go around, as a lot of Canes fans were frustrated with some of the offensive play calling even though Beck really had a solid night with two touchdowns and ZERO interceptions... even though that was the narrative around Beck, right? And while we all thought we'd miss X going into this season, our boy Malachi Toney was absolutely sensational and a huge factor in this win.
On Notre Dame's side of the ball, we felt like CJ Carr looked a lot like Emory Williams, in that they kept his game plan a little too simple and it cost the Irish in the end. And why didn't get more Jeremiyah Love all game? Scoop calls it gross negligence on the offensive coordinators for the Irish. And how do we not recognize one of the best catches by a Miami Hurricane we've ever seen by CJ Daniels - hang it in the Louvre! Ro already says it's going to be his Paul Bange "Blow the Roof Off" clip of the week as we all reel about how great that moment was in such a big game.
And some of the things that were on our radar for improvement were the use of the tight ends, and whether or not our linebackers are going to be able to cover after giving up a couple of big plays. Toast also spotlights that botched snap early in the game, some struggles with tackling, and the offense's unwillingness to run anywhere except up the middle even when it wasn't working. Plus everyone is concerned about the lack of defense against a mobile quarterback, but we're willing to give Hetherman and the defense a pass because we didn't know anything about CJ Carr's running ability.
