On Aug. 28, 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Till was kidnapped and murdered in Mississippi after being accused of whistling at a white woman. Till’s brutal killing and the acquittal of his killers galvanized the civil rights movement. Carolyn Bryant Donham, who made the accusation, died in 2023 at the age of 88.
