Genesis 32:28 (KJV) What's in a name? When God changes Jacob's name to Israel, He is calling out the new identity and nature He wants to develop in Jacob. Though Jacob was a deceiver, God saw past his sin and called him by the name "Israel," meaning "God prevails." As Adrian Rogers said, "Satan knows your name but calls you by your sin. God knows your sin but calls you by your name." Jacob's old nature was transforming to align with the name God spoke over him. And God wants to do the same work in our lives. As Charles Spurgeon said, "When God means to make a man His own, He usually begins by knocking him down." God knocks down our old nature so that His strength can prevail as He refashions us. When we submit to God's refining fire, He calls us by the new name of His child, saved and redeemed. Though we were sinners, when God looks at us, He sees the righteousness of Christ. No matter what struggles you face today, remember your true identity is found in Him. Do not listen to the lies of the enemy. Listen instead for the voice of your Father, calling you by name.
