Supernatural: Torn and Frayed (8x10) | Recap & Lore

Season 8 Episode 10 Published 1 year, 2 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 8, Episode 10, Torn and Frayed recap 🪛 Crowley has Alfie, Naomi has Cas on a very short leash, and Sam has an ultimatum from Amelia on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

It’s the mid-season premiere. Samandriel’s been tortured for a week, and Naomi sends Cas to bring him home. Cas needs help, which means talking to people, which means Dean. Meanwhile, Sam is camped out in a motel waiting on Amelia. Plus, a brand-new old review on Audible, shout-outs from Spotify, Tumblr, and Reddit, and a Patreon plug: members can send in questions for the hosts’ upcoming guests.

Episode Highlights:

  • Alfie pushes a spike out of his own head, and a demon in a bow tie and lab coat walks in
  • Cas heals a crying baby in the park (great, but where were you yesterday?)
  • Dean wakes up to Cas watching him sleep, again, plus the least effective porn cover-up in history
  • A talking burning bush, and a burn victim who’s a very good sport about it
  • Amelia’s ultimatum, and Berly has some thoughts on one fist in, one fist out
  • Kevin is sassy on Garth’s houseboat, with a suspiciously well-groomed beard
  • Cas carries a Sharpie (who knew?) and hands Sam his angel blade (new favorite?)
  • The brothers in perfect sync: sigil-busting and tag-team door-ramming
  • A phone call from Benny that has the hosts worried
  • The boys gossip about Cas behind a wall of sigils (“All tea, no shade”), and Dean admits he was jealous

The hosts still can’t figure out what Vigo was for, since Crowley shows up anyway, but his bow tie was cute. Both are intrigued by Naomi and her creepy dentist vibes, and LA is ready to be done with the Amelia flashbacks. They wanted so much better for Alfie, and they’re seriously worried about Benny. There’s no gore, but the torture scenes are uncomfortable and sad. Plus, Berly issues a correction: the angel she’s been joking about isn’t Samandriel.

In the lore segment, LA covers the true story of brainwashing from Smithsonian Magazine. The term was popularized in the 1950s by Edward Hunter, who was later revealed to be a CIA propaganda agent, and the panic took off when American POWs in the Korean War made shocking false confessions. Psychiatrist Robert J. Lifton found the soldiers hadn’t been brainwashed at all. They’d been tortured with sleep deprivation, isolation, and endless propaganda. The fear spawned The Manchurian Candidate and the CIA’s MKUltra program, and the techniques eventually became real interrogation methods. Naomi would fit right in.

“So who snatched Heaven’s most adorable angel?” – Dean
