Nightly 🌙 Project Journey Man
Exactly! That’s one of the coolest details about the original compact Macs — including your Macintosh 512K (M0001E).
The Signatures Inside
- On the inside of the back case, Apple cast the signatures of the entire original Macintosh design team directly into the plastic mold.
- If you open the case (carefully, since these have dangerous CRT voltages), you’ll find 47 engraved signatures, including Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Jef Raskin, Andy Hertzfeld, Bill Atkinson, Burrell Smith, Susan Kare, and many others who contributed to the Macintosh project.
- This was Jobs’s idea — he wanted the team to “sign their work” like artists do.
Which Models Have the Signatures?
- Macintosh 128K (1984)
- Macintosh 512K (1984, M0001E)
- Macintosh 512Ke (1986, upgraded model)
- Macintosh Plus (1986)
Later compact Macs dropped the tradition.
Collectibility Note
- The signed back case is one of the most iconic aspects for collectors.
- Many enthusiasts value having a case with the original engraving intact, since it connects the machine to the famous Apple team that created the Macintosh.
