Supernatural: Citizen Fang (8x09) | Recap & Lore

Season 8 Episode 9 Published 1 year, 2 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 8, Episode 9, Citizen Fang recap 🦐 Benny (Ty Olson) is living his best vampire life at a Cajun hole-in-the-bayou, and Sam has crazy Martin (Jon Gries) watching his every move, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

It’s the mid-season finale, even if it didn’t feel like one. Benny is clean, working his old job in Louisiana, and keeping an eye on the woman (Kathleen Munroe) who runs the place. Then a body turns up, and the hunter Sam secretly put on Benny’s tail is sure he did it. Plus, listeners help solve last episode’s mystery: Mike Farrell looked familiar because of MAS*H (and, for Berly, Providence).

Episode Highlights:

  • Benny pours coffee for a regular who wants to know his “designs” on the boss
  • Crazy Martin is back, and we finally learn his last name
  • Dean doesn’t get to finish his drive-in burger, and we’ll never know what happened to it
  • “You told me to look for an eruption? How’s Mount Vesuvius?” (The hosts rewound it more than once.)
  • “The only holes we need to be thinking about are the two in the vic’s neck”
  • A body by the creek, a shot from inside a washbasin, and Dean slowly coming into focus
  • “I come with.” (Berly needs this as a soundbite.)
  • Sam’s bitter “glad you found someone to trust,” and Martin picks up a knife
  • A blond vamp (Chad Rook) who’s serving Eric from True Blood (where’s Pam?)
  • Martin’s station wagon, a text from “Amelia,” and Dean’s very sneaky long game

It’s more character-driven than gory: a few ripped throats, one very cool decapitation, and no splooges. Both hosts loved having Benny back, and his bond with Dean is pure brothers-in-arms. They’re crushed that he might have to give up his quiet life. Martin was a delight in the first half, then he started pissing them off. The Amelia flashbacks still need a timeline, and Berly thinks Amelia should make her own decision about Don (Paul Campbell), without waiting for someone else to want her. Plus, a Benny moment on a dark diner floor had Berly tearing up.

In the lore segment, LA revisits the vampire hunter lore from Bloodlust. Balkan “sabbatarians” were born on Saturday, could see invisible vampires, and in some places had to eat sheep killed by a wolf. Croatian and Slovenian villages had kresniks, whose spirits turned into animals at night to fight vampires. Then there’s the famous Arnold Paole case from 18th-century Serbia. And now the Travel Channel’s Vampires in America follows the two men who claim to be the only vampire hunters in the US, chasing 20,000 vampires across all 50 states. The hosts have one message for them: leave those vampires alone!

“I know it’s hard to believe, but I haven’t always been this cute and cuddly.” – Benny
