In 1997 the largest mass suicide on US soil happened as the Hale-Bopp Comet passed over earth. The tragedy was a result of the belief that evil space aliens were holding humans back from reaching their true potential, deeply held by the religious organization Heaven's Gate, founded in 1974 by leaders Ti and Do. One of the earliest members, Sharon Welsh just happened to be the aunt of my friend and fellow podcaster, Leslie Fear. So I asked Leslie if she would come help me tell the story of Heaven's Gate, using her never been told insider perspective.
