In northwest Fresno, near Shaw and Marks avenues, officers responded shortly after 9 p.m. on July 6 to a ShotSpotter activation indicating gunfire. They discovered a victim suffering from a gunshot wound in a nearby parking lot. The victim was transported to Community Regional Medical Center and is now in stable condition. Surveillance video revealed that the victim had been chased by four males before being shot by one of them. Julian Nathaniel Benavidez was identified as the alleged shooter and was arrested without incident on July 17. Police recovered a firearm believed to be used in the shooting during a search of a residence. Benavidez was booked into the Fresno County Jail on multiple felony charges, including assault with a firearm and related firearm enhancements. The homeowner, who is a convicted felon, was found in possession of firearms, ammunition, and body armor. All suspects were booked into the Fresno County Jail. Arrests were made on-site and the incident is considered closed pending further judicial proceedings.
