Description
Supernatural Season 8, Episode 6, Southern Comfort recap 🤠Garth is back in full Texas Ranger cosplay, the blood splooges come in pairs, and a Civil War grudge goes viral on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
The brothers haven’t spoken since the vampire nest, but a gruesome garage murder in Kearney, Missouri, gets them back on the road. They aren’t the only hunters on the case, either. Garth (DJ Qualls) is already working it, carrying multiple cell phones and Bobby’s bourbon-soaked journal. LA takes the recap, and Berly couldn’t be happier that she drew the Garth episode.
Episode Highlights:
- A car jack, a very mad wife, and blood splooge #61
- Dean finds a case in the 10 minutes it takes Sam to grab barbecue
- Garth arrives as a “Texas Ranger” in Missouri, in a fringed suede jacket and with a windblown hat moment
- Garth coaches Earl through a revenant hunt by phone, and Sam asks the question: is he the new Bobby?
- Garth licks the green goo, and he clearly knows what it tastes like
- Garth went to college (and dental school), and his first job was the Tooth Fairy
- Blood splooge #62 at the convenience store, plus a very jaunty soundtrack
- Dean snatches Bobby’s hat right off Garth’s head
- Sarah Alcott’s sweet tea, Carl sniffing Dean, and a lucky penny making the rounds
Both hosts adore Garth, and DJ Qualls nails every emotional beat. His journal hints that he’s been hitting the books, and his “Bobby belonged to all of us” moment is a standout. Berly loves the running ringtone gag: Kris Kross, then New Kids on the Block, then exactly the payoff Dean predicted. She also likes the war theme running through the season, with Dean and Benny as brothers in arms and Amelia as the widow at home. She has a theory about why Sam is so mad. The gore: two blood splooges and some great zombie soldier makeup.
In the lore segment, Berly digs deep (all the way to the Sinister Coffee & Creamery blog) to find out what makes a specter different from a regular vengeful ghost. The word comes from the 1600s, from the French spectre and the Latin spectrum, meaning an apparition. In ancient Mesopotamia, spirits returned to right a wrong. In Egypt, the properly buried dead watched over the living. The Greeks and Romans saw them in dreams. That covers both the avenging and the desecrated-grave sides of this episode.
“Kevin’s in the wind, and you’re sulking around like a eunuch in a whorehouse.” – Dean
