Description
Supernatural Season 8, Episode 5, Blood Brother recap đ´ââ ď¸ Benny calls in a favor, Dean ditches Sam for a day, and it turns out vampire pirates were a thing all along, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
Benny (Ty Olson) is back in his old stomping grounds, looking for revenge on the nest that sent him to Purgatory, and he needs Deanâs help. Meanwhile, Sam is left alone with a laptop, a Kevin search, and some Facebook stalking. Plus, a Patreon member married to a veteran reframes the hostsâ âDean breaking up with Bennyâ theory: two vets home from a war zone, needing space. (LA is calling in from the mountains, so bear with her audio.)
Episode Highlights:
- Bennyâs cold open: a sassy vamp in a hot pink shirt, a line about Godâs ass, and a head that rolls
- An adorable motel room, Kevinâs âcriminal Rain Manâ skills (he did take AP classes), and Sam cracking a beer
- âYou took off for a year. Iâm asking for a day.â
- Bennyâs beat-up truck, a cooler of blood, and a great reveal shot down at the docks
- Purgatory flashbacks: Benny whistling classical music mid-fight, and Cas asking the question Berlyâs been asking all season
- Benny cleans up nice: suspenders, film noir shadows, and a hint of blue
- Vampirates who board, burn, and bury, and Benny canât believe no one thought of the name sooner
- Amelia, a giant bag of limes, and a red flag that Samâs charm glides right past
- Dean calls Sam mid-raid and turns the scolding into a distraction
- A head rolling down a backlit hallway, an âold manâ who isnât, and a handshake on the dock
Written by Ben Edlund and directed by Guy Norman Bee, and they knocked it out of the park. Itâs Berlyâs hands-down favorite of the season so far, and LA agrees. Itâs a visually stunning episode: hallway shots, foreground-to-background reveals, and enough shadow work for a film noir. Berly says it feels like a marriage of the Kripke and Gamble eras, and the bickering brothers are back. The one complaint is that the âold manâ just isnât formidable. Plus, Jared Padalecki delivers a whole conversation on the dock without a single line. Thereâs no real gore, just one very satisfying rolling head.
In the lore segment, LA follows up on the vampire lore from Dead Manâs Blood. The word âvampireâ first showed up in 1700s writing about price-gouging merchants. In 1819, John Polidoriâs The Vampyre, based loosely on Lord Byron, made vampires seductive. Then came Bram Stokerâs hairy-palmed Dracula, Bela Lugosiâs debonair count, and everything from The Lost Boys to What We Do in the Shadows. Then it gets real: a 2015 survey by the Atlanta Vampire Alliance found at least 5,000 Americans who identify as vampires. That includes blood drinkers, psychic âenergyâ vampires like Colin Robinson, and a New Orleans community where Maven Lore will fit you for fangs.
âWeâre gonna shove your ass back through the eye of that needle, even if it kills all three of us.â â Dean
