कस्यचन वणिजः गृहम् उभयतः द्वौ लोहकारौ कुटीरं निर्माय प्रतिदिनं प्रातः आरभ्य रात्रिपर्यन्तं कार्यं कुरुतः । आदिनं कर्कशं लोहकुट्टनशब्दं सोढुम् अशक्नुवन् वणिक् एकम् उपायं करोति । परेद्यवि ताभ्यां लोहकाराभ्याम् अन्यकुटीरगमनार्थं सहस्रं रूप्यकाणि अयच्छत् । उभौ अपि अङ्गीकृतवन्तौ । किन्तु अग्रिमदिवसे पुनः कुट्टनशब्दं श्रुत्वा यदा वणीक् तौ पृच्छति तदा तौ वदतः 'आवां कुटीरपरिवर्तनं कृतवन्तौ । वामभागे कुटीरे स्थितः अहम् इदानीं दक्षिणभागे निवसामि । सः इदानीं वामभागे निवसति' इति । एतत् उत्तरं श्रुत्वा वणिक् मूकः एव अभवत् ।

The story humorously narrates the struggle of a merchant who had two blacksmiths working in huts on either side of his house, creating a constant racket from dawn till night. Unable to tolerate the noise, he offered each blacksmith a thousand rupees to move to a different hut. Both agreed, but the next day, the merchant heard the same clanging noise. When he questioned them, they explained, "We have moved to a different hut. I now live in the hut on the right, and he lives in the hut on the left". Hearing this, the merchant was left speechless.
