Bobby Rahal, the legendary race car driver, Indy 500 Champion, Motorsports Hall of Famer and now President of the Road Racers Drivers Club joins host Stewart Howden to discuss his amazing career, incredible car collection and his current endeavors.
The Road Racers Drivers Club was founded in 1952 by the best drivers in the world. People like Roger Penske and Mark Donohue helped grow the club and teach racing. Road racing exploded after World War 2 in the 1950s when guys brought back MGs and Austin-Healeys and Volkswagens and Porsches. Drivers like Mark Donohue would speak to interested drivers about racing and help teach them. The RRDC has also been involved in improving safety in racing. In the 1950s there was a lot of road racing on actual roads and it was dangerous and soon tracks were built to hold the races.
They discuss why Mark Donohue was one of the greatest drivers of all time, and one of the main reasons is that he was an engineer and really understood how to set up a car and how to make it handle.
Bobby Rahal tells Stewart about some of his personal car collection including a 1967 Toyota 2000 GT that is 1 of only 314 built and there are probably few left. Rahal then bought a Shelby Cobra 427 and a Mark 1 Ford GT Race Car. The car Rahal regrets selling the most is a 1961 Ferrari 250GT SWB (short wheel base). He sold his 1973 Porsche RS 2.7 Carrera. He recently bought a 1964 Porsche 904. He has a 2000 GT and a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC, a 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL, a 1967 Porsche 911 S, and a 1972 BMW 2002 Tii, which was the car he owned when he was in college. He also owned a Shelby 289 Cobra that was restored by Bill Murray. Rahal also owned a 427 Cobra, but prefers the 289 Cobra. He tells Stewart about driving a Cobra and the differences between driving an old car and a new one. The 289 Cobra is a better balanced car than the 427 with less weight over the front axle.
Bobby Rahal is a big Slot Mods Car Fan and has an incredible Slot Track that is a 1/32 scale of Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
