Men’s Steeplechase opened the track campaign, with Ed Trippas placing 11th in the first heat in 8:29.90, while in the second heat Ben Buckingham ran a personal best of 8:20.95 after initially being disqualified for stepping inside the track which was then subsequently reversed. Matt Clarke also in the second heat ran 8:46.23.

Women’s 800m heats Morgan Mitchell ran 2:05.44 to place sixth in the first heat, while Catriona Bisset ran 2:01.65 for fifth place in the fifth heat.

Humid conditions greeted the first night of the long distance racing in the Women’s 5000m starting with Rose Davies in the first heat finishing 15:50.07, then in the second heat Jenny Blundell lead the race before finishing 15:11.27 while Izzy Batt-Doyle ran her Olympic debut in 15:21.65

Patrick Tiernan was in the mix with a lap to go in the 10,000m before bravely battling on as his body struggled in the final 200m. The race was won by Selemon Berega of Ethiopia with Ugandan pair Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo taking the minor placings.

Peter Bol set a new National Record in the opening heat of the Men’s 800m 1:44.13, as he, Charlie Hunter and Jeff Riseley all advanced. In the semi finals, Bol then lowered his record further to 1:44.11 to advance to the final on Wednesday night. Jeff Risely’s run in his semi final was impeded by a fall between Nijel Amos of Botswana and Isaiah Jewett of the USA.
