Let me begin with a truth we can’t afford to ignore: Despite the diversity of the U.S. education system—spanning public, private, and charter schools across every racial and economic line—high school graduates in many other countries are outperforming ours. They’re entering the global workforce better prepared, more literate, more analytical, and far more capable of meeting the demands of the 21st century. Meanwhile, American students—Black, Brown, or White; affluent or underserved—are far too often leaving high school without mastering essential skills, like how to write a thesis statement or support it with clear, organized reasoning.
