On June 16, 1822, Denmark Vesey’s planned slave uprising in Charleston, South Carolina, was exposed before it could begin. Vesey, a formerly enslaved man who had purchased his freedom, organized a massive rebellion with fellow church leaders from Emanuel AME Church. Their plan to burn the city and kill white enslavers was uncovered, leading to the arrest and execution of Vesey and 34 others.
