'यथा कृत्यं तथा फलम्' इति वचनस्य उत्तमम् उदाहरणं भवितुम् अर्हति एषा कथा । कदाचित् मित्रे गजवानरौ नद्याः अपरस्मिन् तीरे स्थितानि स्वादूनि फलानि खादितुम् उद्युक्तौ । वानरः अङ्कुशं गृहीत्वा गजस्य पृष्ठे उपविष्टवान् । सः कदाचित् अङ्कुशेन गजं ताडयित्वा, पीडयित्वा कार्यं कारयन्तं हस्तिपकं दृष्टवान् आसीत् । गजः नद्यां किञ्चिद्दूरं गतवान् तदा वानरः गजम् अङ्कुशेन पीडयितुम् उद्युक्तः । गजः महतीं वेदनाम् अनुभूतवान् । यदा गजः नद्याः मध्यभागं प्राप्तवान् जले निमग्नः अभवत् । तरणम् अजानन् वानरः जले निमज्जनेन अचिरात् मरणं प्राप्तवान् ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)
This story serves as an excellent example of the saying, "As you sow, so shall you reap". Once upon a time, two friends—a monkey and an elephant were eager to eat some delicious fruits on the other side of the river. The monkey, holding a goad (ankusha), climbed onto the elephant's back. Having seen how a mahout (elephant keeper) controlled an elephant by striking and causing pain with the goad, the monkey decided to do the same. He began striking the elephant with the goad, causing great pain to the elephant. When they reached the middle of the river, the elephant submerged itself in the water. Being unable to swim, the monkey drowned in the water shortly afterward.
