Description
Supernatural Season 8, Episode 3, Heartache recap đź«€ Hearts are getting ripped out across the Midwest, a Mayan chant keeps turning up at the crime scenes, and the trail leads to a strip club called the Bunny Hole, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
Dean wants to work a case, and Sam wants to stick to the Kevin mission. The victims are all connected to organ transplants, and the donor was a football star with a very long résumé. Plus, listeners weigh in on the hosts’ Kevin debate, including one who made a strong case for Sam using the Mystery Spot.
Episode Highlights:
- A night jogger gets smoked by a hefty speed demon (Kali Ma!)
- Did Sam steal that apple at the farmers market?
- A cop who really, really does not like Dean
- Dean blows up Paul’s bathroom, then judges his smoothie
- A Mayan chant that gets a ’70s earworm stuck in Berly’s head
- A strip club called the Bunny Hole (read that sign carefully)
- Randa in That Dress, and a heart with a bite taken out of it
- A secret room behind the clothes, a samurai suit, and old letters that mention Sugar Ray
- Randa’s Xena Warrior Princess monologue, delivered from the stage
- Sam gets knocked out (again), and a saxophone-soaked flashback the hosts did not love
Written by Brad Buckner and Eugenie Ross-Leming and directed by Jensen Ackles. That means Jensen directed the scene where Randa pins him under her foot, and a heavy episode is a tough gig to direct when you’re in it this much. Both hosts agree that all the right pieces were there: a unique monster and a relatable love story. But it needed more workshopping, with too much donor-hopping and the Mayan story rushed at the end. LA liked Brick and Betsy’s 1940s romance. Berly would trade the Randa-Eleanor scene for one of Randa’s pole routines, and they still has no idea how Dean knew to go to Boulder.
In the lore segment, Berly explains the Popol Vuh, the Maya creation story, using a Delaware Valley University blog on Hun Hunahpu, the maize god. Two ball-playing brothers make too much noise above the underworld and get tricked to their deaths. Then one brother’s twin sons outsmart the underworld gods with a mosquito spy, bring their father back as the maize god, and become the sun and moon. The first humans were made from white corn. An Earth Stories piece connects the maize god to cacao pods, which may be where the show got its god’s name.
“Too bad I dropped out of Lunatic 101.” – Dean
Your turn, hunters: Can anyone explain how Dean knew to go to Boulder? And was the Amelia picnic flashback sweet or cheesy? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it’s how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
