HEADLINES the last 48 hours have been dominated by the public spat between President Trump and Elon Musk. What does it mean?
To us, it seems like what pro wrestlers call kayfabe—a performance for the audience that looks real but is just an act. It’s in the best interests of the government (at least as far as NASA and SpaceX are concerned) and Musk to patch things up.
This could be a way to flush out people in the administration who aren’t loyal to President Trump. On the other hand, if this is legit it could be President Trump’s way of distancing himself from the “tech bros” like Musk, Peter Thiel, and Larry Ellison.
We think that’s less likely given the Trump administration’s commitment to develop artificial intelligence. However, we note recent news stories about AI models that have lied, cheated, and threatened its engineers. And this week, it was reported that the newest OpenAI models rewrote its code during testing to avoid being shut down—in other words, refusing to obey a direct order!
