Description
Supernatural Season 8, Episode 1, We Need to Talk About Kevin recap 🪓 Dean claws his way out of Purgatory, Sam has a dog, and nobody went looking for Kevin, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
It’s the Season 8 premiere and the start of the Jeremy Carver era. A year after Dick blew, Dean is back with a Purgatory weapon, a few secrets, and plenty of feelings about what Sam did while he was gone. Plus, Spotify comments from S Noel 34, Corinne Tang, and Jackie4, and a request: Steve Hein needs to cosplay as Benny.
Episode Highlights:
- A muddy Dean pops out of nowhere in Maine’s 100-Mile Wilderness and mugs some campers like a little raccoon
- A windmill, a Mary Poppins backpack, and a glowing arm that’s very ready to get out
- Sam sneaks out on a sleeping girl in Kermit, Texas, but makes sure to say goodbye to the dog
- Dean’s very thorough “test me” routine, including an arm cut that needed stitches
- Six months of Kevin’s voicemails, and the great Kevin debate, with LA as Sam’s defense attorney
- Fans promised Sam’s best-hair season, and LA spots the male version of the Rachel
- Purgatory flashbacks with a gorgeous color grade, a very pretty vampire, and a big entrance
- Channing’s roommate plays matchmaker with a very weird dating profile, then a Bond villain chair spin
- Kevin’s spa day with Crowley, a hell gate in Wisconsin, and a lot of goats
- Spanky “uses too much teeth,” a holy water booby trap, and Kevin’s breaking news: “You’re going to your safety school”
Written by new showrunner Jeremy Carver and directed by Robert Singer, whose tight close-up at the vending machine had Berly wondering about the lens. It’s a busy premiere with a lot of unanswered questions. LA loved that Sam got a reprieve and saved a dog, even if he went about it wrong. Berly is thrilled about Benny (Ty Olson), though she didn’t expect him this early. The gore award goes to Sam’s arm. The hosts also wonder: do Dean’s talks with Sam and Benny sound like breakups, or does media just rarely show friendships ending?
In the lore segment, LA reads Maxim’s advice column “How to Deal with a Possessed Girlfriend,” which turns out to be an Evil Dead promo. It answers three readers: a guy who played a Sumerian resurrection incantation on a romantic cabin getaway, a husband whose wife’s head spins 360 degrees, and a fiancé whose virgin bride-to-be now has fangs. The solutions involve a shovel, a Cradle of Filth concert, and a stake, in that order.
“Standing too close to an exploding Dick sends your ass straight to Purgatory.” – Dean
