“Uccidere in nome della fede è un tema di scottante attualità, in riferimento al terrorismo islamico, ma per secoli è stato riferito alle Crociate. Se i cristiani delle origini prendevano sul serio il comandamento “Non uccidere”, al punto che ci fu chi affrontò il martirio pur di non combattere, le Crociate provocarono un drammatico ribaltamento di questi principi, sulla spinta d’una convinzione popolare (che uccidere gli infedeli fosse gradito a Dio) cui la Chiesa, nonostante le iniziali perplessità, non seppe opporsi, e che provocò, insieme alla conquista della Terrasanta, anche i primi pogrom antiebraici d’Europa.
