Be Honest

Description

“Acting is all about honesty. If you can fake that, you've got it made.”

- George Burns

On I agree with this quote, but I also disagree with it.

Acting is all about honesty. To be believable in your performance you have to be real in your performance.

It has to come from somewhere that you as the actor, as the performer connect to some way.

What I disagree with is that you can fake it. If you fake it, people can tell. In any of your art, if it doesn’t come from a genuine place, people won’t feel it. If people don’t feel it, it’s not art, it’s content.

If you’re making art just to make it or just to make money, you’re not making art, you’re making content. Shoutout to a Father Bronques for that gem.

Content isn’t art.

Content is like the word the, an, or a.

We need these words, but if a sentence was made of only these words, nothing is really being said.

Content is like driving to a place you go so often that you don’t even notice the streets and buildings and other cars as you drive. You just arrive at your location.

Of course you’re happy you got where you were going, but you didn’t even enjoy the trip.

Think of when a kid is on a plane. They love to open the window to look out at the other planes on the tarmac. They love to see the plane start to roll away from the gate. They get so excited when the plane starts to speed up! And when that plane gets its wheels off the ground is like a weightless roller coaster. And it doesn’t end there! They’re so in awe of seeing the clouds and so many buildings, roads, and people so small down there!

The reason they get so excited and the reason you were so into what you just read was because you were focused on the feelings.

Content isn’t a journey. It’s informational at best and at worst it’s destructive.

Art is felt. Art is transformative. Art is creative.
