Do you really wanna be like everyone else? And if you do why do you want to? What do you gain from being like everyone else?

When I was a teacher, I used to start the year off telling my students they’re weird AND to be proud of it. If a kid tells you you’re weird at recess, smile, say thank you and keep it moving.

That translates so well to being an artist.

Someone says your work is too different, tell them thank you! You shouldn’t be trying to be like everyone else. That does nothing for the world. You shouldn’t be playing it small. Marianne Williamson said your light will give others persmission to shine their own. What will we lose if you decide to be like everyone else?

If you are trying to be like others in your art, what’s the point? Show us something we haven’t seen. There is a difference in being inspired by others versus being just like them. Influences in your work are great!

As an actor, we are often told to make a bold choice. Weird people make bold choices. And what do you gain from making a bold choice? You stand out. You stand out for being what only you can do. Even if you aren’t accepted, at least you are true to you! That is all an artist needs to make more great things. Not everyone needs to like your work, just those that like your work, need to like your work.

Most importantly, be proud of your weird.

Embarrassment in your craft will get you no where.
