A Mom Speaks Out On Her Ordeal With CPS, How It Affected Her Family And Foster Care
Description
Slam the Gavel welcomes an anonymous mother. She and her two children began their ordeal with CSD in Portland, Oregon in 1991, during which time her husband abandoned the family and Mother died.
Her parental rights were terminated after a nearly 3-year battle and successfully completing multiple service plans. She then moved and remarried, eventually having to endure a costly fight to keep from having her son removed at birth due to a “history” with children's services. She was able win that case and leave the hospital with her son, who is now 21.
Her two children were adopted out to a couple who received SSI money for them and they were subjected to abuse and neglect in this placement. The father was charged for the ongoing rape of her daughter and served 8 years. While the agency was involved, their parental rights were never terminated. As teens living in extreme poverty, they sought out their mother on facebook.
Today, her children are faced with an unsure future due to physical and mental health issues and past trauma, as well as having had previous problems with substance abuse and the criminal system. Neither are able to work and her daughter will remain in group-home care. This Mom is working on a book and hoping now to hold the system accountable in court in the hopes that her adult children and others will be able to be compensated for the damage done to their lives and future. Speaking out on this injustice and self care are very important to every parent and she highly recommended the book, "The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma," by Bessel van Der Kolk, M.D.
