PADRES POSTCAST: Pads BLOW LATE LEAD, Lose Series Finale TO YANKEES 4-3 in 10 Innings in New York

Episode 1069 Published 1 year ago
Description

Pinch-hitter J.C. Escarra hit a sacrifice fly off Jeremiah Estrada in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat the Padres 4-3- after trailing 1-0 and 3-1- to give the Yankees back-to-back wins- and the series W- when the Padres held the lead in the 7th inning of both games. The Yankees hit a couple of late home runs, 1 by Cody Bellinger & one by Trent Grisham, lighting up the Pads' bullpen for the 2nd straight night.

The Padres had runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs in the top of the 10th, but Devin Williams struck out Xander Bogaerts to end the threat and set up the walkout for the Yanks in the house that Jeet and Mo built. Williams- recently demoted as NY's closer- struck out the side in the 10th, getting Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Bogaerts between walking Luis Arraez (0-10 in the series) and hitting Jackson Merrill with a fastball on the left forearm.

Dylan Cease (6 2/3, 1 hit, 1 run, 9 K's) was brilliant for the Padres, striking out Aaron Judge 3 times- including with 2 on & 2 out in the 3rd- while dominating the yankees' lineup from top to bottom all night. The one run Cease did give up came on Bellinger's solo homer in the 7th inning (off a chin-high fastball) that tied the game at 1 apiece and sent Yankee Stadium into a frenzy. Cease retired the next hitter for the 2nd out, then had to leave the game after experiencing tightness in his right forearm.

Merril hit a solo home run off Max Fried (7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 8 K) to make it 1-0 Padres in the 4th inning, and later added an RBI single for his 4th hit in 2 games since coming off the injured list. Merrill was hit by a Williams fastball on his left forearm in the 10th inning.

The Padres scored 2 runs in the 7th to retake the lead 3-1 on Merrill's RBI single and Bogaerts' sacrifice fly. Fernando Tatis Jr. led off with a walk, went to 2nd on Arraez's groundout and scored on Merrill's single. Bogaerts, who has 6 RBI's in his last 4 games, then hit a ball deep enough to score Manny Machado, who had walked.

Jason Adam came on to pitch the 8th, and walked the leadoff hitter before allowing Grisham- who had homered earlier in the series- to chop one over the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium.

Closer Robert Suarez pitched a perfect 9th for the Padres, but was never in a position to pick up the save and add to his MLB-leading total. (14)

The Dodgers beat the Marlins, and the Giants topped the Cubs, so the Padres are now 1.5 games behind the Dodgers, tied with the Giants for 2nd place in the NL West. (LA just played the Marlins & the Giants just played the Rockies - Pads go to Col this wknd)
