Description

The Divine Abode in the Clouds

Perched atop Jakhu Hill, the highest peak in Shimla, the Jakhu Hanuman Temple is more than a place of worship—it is a spiritual beacon for devotees and a marvel for visitors. Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the temple is deeply entrenched in ancient mythological tales, especially the Ramayana, and offers panoramic views of the surrounding Shivalik ranges and dense deodar forests.

Rising at an altitude of 8,054 feet (2,455 meters) above sea level, the temple is not only one of the most important religious sites in Himachal Pradesh but also home to one of the tallest statues of Lord Hanuman in the world.

Foundation and Mythological Origin

The origin of the Jakhu Temple is intimately connected with a legend from the Ramayana. According to Hindu mythology:

While Lord Lakshman was grievously injured during the battle in Lanka, Lord Hanuman was sent to fetch the Sanjeevani Booti, a life-saving herb from the Dronagiri Mountain in the Himalayas. On his way, Hanuman is believed to have landed on Jakhu Hill to rest, where he met a sage (Rishi Yaaku). After gathering details about the herb's location, Hanuman resumed his journey.

The temple is believed to be established at the very spot where Hanuman set foot, and thus holds tremendous religious importance as a divine leela-sthal (divine-play site).

The word “Jakhu” is derived from ‘Yaaku’, the name of the sage who witnessed Hanuman's divine presence on the hill.

Temple Architecture and Features

Though the temple structure is modest, it is spiritually majestic. Surrounded by towering pine and deodar trees, the ambiance is serene and meditative.
