The time is now 09:00 AM in New York, I'm Noa Levi and this is the latest Israel Today: Ongoing War Report.

Today, Israel marks its 77th Independence Day amid a complex and ongoing conflict that spans multiple fronts across the region. The celebrations have been notably subdued this year, with the traditional torch-lighting ceremony on Mount Herzl canceled at the last minute due to forecasted strong winds, highlighting the security and safety concerns amid ongoing hostilities. Instead, a recorded version of this week's dress rehearsal will be broadcast, marking the second consecutive year that the event will not be held live, primarily due to extreme weather conditions rather than ideological reasons.

Despite the weather disruptions, several key events are proceeding as planned. At the President's Residence, a ceremony honoring 120 outstanding IDF soldiers is underway, with security measures in place to protect the honorees' identities. Later in the day, the International Bible Quiz for Jewish youth continues to celebrate Israel’s deep cultural and religious heritage. The evening will culminate in the Israel Prize ceremony at the Jerusalem International Convention Center, where for the first time, half of the recipients are women, marking a significant milestone in gender equality in Israeli society.

Weather conditions have improved, with the intense heat that triggered devastating fires in the Jerusalem Hills beginning to subside. Temperatures are expected to drop by about 10 degrees Celsius, providing a more temperate climate into the weekend. However, the fires caused extensive damage, scorched approximately 13,000 hectares, and prompted the deployment of firefighting teams from Israel and several international partners, including Croatia, France, Italy, Romania, and Spain. Authorities reported that over 163 firefighting personnel and 12 aircraft managed to bring the fires largely under control, though hotspots remain, and strong winds could still pose a threat.

On the security front, Israel continues to face threats on multiple fronts linked to the broader regional conflict. In Lebanon, the Lebanese army reports significant progress in dismantling Hezbollah’s infrastructure—claiming over 90% has been destroyed south of the Litani River—while controlling 85% of southern Lebanon, an area previously under Hezbollah's influence. Nonetheless, tensions persist, with reports of Israeli military activity in the area and ongoing concerns about Hezbollah’s capabilities.

In Syria, the situation remains tense as reports indicate that the Syrian regime has entered the town of Tchhnaya, where clashes between Druze communities and regime forces have resulted in the death of the local mayor, who was also the son of the town’s leader. This incident underscores ongoing internal conflicts and the fragile stability in the region.

Meanwhile, Iran continues to assert its influence, accusing the United States of contradictory behavior and provocative statements amid nuclear negotiations. Iran criticizes ongoing sanctions and US threats over its support for groups like the Houthis in Yemen, who have disrupted regional trade routes and attacked ships in the Red Sea. The US has responded with intensified bombing campaigns against Houthi positions and has imposed new sanctions related to Iran’s oil trade, while diplomatic talks in Rome remain uncertain and fraught with tension.

In Lebanon, reports confirm that a Lebanese rescue worker injured in earlier Israeli strikes has succumbed to wounds sustained during an attack on a vehicle in the southern border region. This ongoing cycle of violence highlights the persistent volatility al
