A Profile Of Evil: Ed Kemper (4/27/25)

Edmund Kemper, often referred to as the "Co-Ed Killer," is an American serial killer and necrophile who murdered ten people, including his own grandparents and mother, between 1964 and 1973. Standing at 6 feet 9 inches tall and possessing a disturbingly calm demeanor, Kemper is known for targeting young female hitchhikers in California, whom he would abduct, murder, and often mutilate after death. His killing spree began at age 15 when he murdered his grandparents, leading to his institutionalization. After his release at 21, Kemper embarked on a series of brutal murders, culminating in the killing of his abusive mother—a murder he later described as his ultimate target all along.

What sets Kemper apart from many serial killers is his extraordinary intelligence—reportedly possessing an IQ of 145—and his chillingly articulate interviews after his capture. He voluntarily confessed to his crimes in 1973, offering gruesome details to investigators with an unsettling lack of remorse. Kemper became a key case study for the FBI’s early criminal profiling unit, helping agents understand the psychology of serial killers. He remains incarcerated at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, where he has become infamous not only for his crimes but for his unnervingly calm discussions about them.
