We Need Ruminant Animals, Carnivorism, Surprising Statistics | Peter Ballerstedt PhD

Episode 19

Peter Ballerstedt, Ph.D., affectionately known as 'Don Pedro, Sodfather of the Ruminati,' is a retired forage agronomist with a distinguished career rooted in advancing agricultural science and metabolic health. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Georgia and his doctorate from the University of Kentucky, before serving as Oregon State University’s forage extension specialist from 1986 to 1992. With over a decade in the forage seed industry until 2023, Peter is a Past-President of the American Forage and Grassland Council and remains active in national and international scientific societies. Since reversing his pre-diabetes through a reduced carbohydrate lifestyle in 2007, he has emerged as a passionate advocate for the intersection of ruminant agriculture and human health. Peter has spoken at numerous global events, challenging conventional dietary narratives and promoting the ecological, economic, and social sustainability of animal-source foods. His presentations, widely available on YouTube, reflect his mission to unite producers, researchers, and consumers. Living in western Oregon with his wife Nancy and their three dogs, Conor, Noni, and Iris, Peter continues to share his insights through his blog, GrassBasedHealth, and social media.
