Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islamism… the #33 features strongly as a symbolic message in all these religions.

33 has always been associated with Freemasonry.
For the sake of the uninitiated, there are 3 degrees of Masonry: 1st Degree Entered Apprentice, 2nd Degree Fellowcraft, and 3rd Degree Master Mason. The 3rd Degree Master Mason is the highest degree in Masonry.
Then, there is the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, which is an organization that exists within Freemasonry that Master Masons may join if they choose to. Sort of a secret organization within a secret organization – for the especially illuminated. Within the Scottish Rite, exists the 33rd Honorary Degree. Less than 1% of Scottish Rite masons ever obtain that degree. It is awarded only to masons who have performed some exemplary service.
According to the Membership Director of the Scottish Rite Supreme Council at Washington, DC, in 2006 about 0.5% of all Masons in the U.S. have received the 33rd Degree. Since then, the number of Masons elected to receive the 33rd Degree was purposely reduced.
