New York Refuses Trump Administration's Order to End DEI in Public Schools

Published 1 year ago
Description

According to the Associated Press, New York state officials have informed the federal Education Department that they will not comply with the Trump administration’s demand to end diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices in public schools.

In a letter, state officials said they do not believe the federal agency has the legal authority to impose such conditions or threaten funding.

The administration recently ordered K-12 schools to certify within 10 days that they are ending DEI practices to continue receiving federal aid, which makes up about 6% of New York’s K-12 school funding.

State education officials responded that they have already certified compliance with civil rights laws and view the administration’s demand as based on a flawed legal interpretation and a sudden policy shift.
