She earned her BS and MS from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, specializing in nonruminant nutrition, and a PhD from the University of Kentucky. She stayed in the UK to complete post-doctoral training in the Department of Physiology with a research emphasis on metabolism and skeletal muscle chronobiology.
