Description
The 2024-2025 college basketball season unequivocally demonstrated the exceptional depth and competitiveness of the Big 12 Conference. Here's a look at how deep the league was, using team names:
Dominance at the Top:
- Houston emerged as a powerhouse, finishing the regular season with a phenomenal 19-1 conference record and earning a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, ultimately reaching the National Championship game.
- Texas Tech also had an outstanding season, going 15-5 in the Big 12 and securing a #3 seed in March Madness, making a run to the Elite Eight.
- BYU and Arizona, both newcomers to the conference, proved their mettle immediately, each finishing with a 14-6 Big 12 record and earning strong NCAA Tournament seeds (#6 and #4 respectively), both reaching the Sweet Sixteen.
- Iowa State
Strong Middle Tier:
- Kansas, despite some ups and downs, still finished above .500 in the conference at 11-9 and made the NCAA Tournament as a #7 seed. Their pedigree and talent made them a dangerous opponent.
- Baylor and West Virginia both finished with identical 10-10 conference records, highlighting the tight competition even in the middle of the pack. West Virginia, despite a .500 conference record, still earned an NCAA Tournament at-large bid, showcasing the respect for the league's overall strength.
Competitive Lower Tier:
- TCU and Kansas State both finished with 9-11 conference records, proving they could compete with many of the league's top teams on any given night.
- Even teams like Utah, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, and UCF, while finishing with losing conference records, demonstrated the ability to pull off upsets and make life difficult for higher-ranked opponents throughout the season. Notably, Cincinnati and UCF each secured NCAA Tournament bids, further highlighting the depth of the conference.
- Arizona State and Colorado rounded out the standings, but still faced the nightly gauntlet of a loaded conference schedule. Colorado even managed to win a game in the Big 12 Tournament.
March Madness Performance:
The NCAA Tournament further solidified the Big 12's depth. The conference sent seven teams to the Big Dance: Houston, Texas Tech, BYU, Arizona, Iowa State, Kansas, and Baylor. The fact that four of these teams – Houston, Texas Tech, BYU, and Iowa State – reached the Sweet Sixteen, and two – Houston and Texas Tech – made the Elite Eight, with Houston advancing to the National Championship, underscores the league's exceptional quality from top to bottom.
