LEGALISM IS ADHERENCE TO THE LAW OF GOD WITHOUT A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. IT IS OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S LAW AS A MEANS OF SALVATION WITHOUT FAITH IN CHRIST. IT STICKS TO THE LETTER OF THE LAW AND IGNORES THE SPIRIT OF THE LAW. THE LETTER OF THE LAW SAYS “THOU SHALL NOT KILL” THE SPIRIT OF THE LAW SAYS “IF YOU HATE SOMEONE IN YOUR HEART YOU HAVE ALREADY KILLED” THE LETTER SAYS “THOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY” THE SPIRIT OF THE LAW SAYS “IF YOU LOOK LUSTFULLY AT SOMEONE YOU HAVE ALREADY COMMITTED ADULTERY!” ONLY CHRIST IN THE HEART CAN MAKE US FULFILL THE SPIRIT OF THE LAW!

Romans 3:20-24

Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus

Jeremiah 2:22

For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.

Job 14:4

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one. 

Jeremiah 17:9-10

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 10I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.

Romans 7:18-24

For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 21I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

Romans 8:1-4

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Ezekiel 36:27

And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. 

1 John 1:6-9

If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 

Revelation 7:13-14

And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?
