PFAS-Free EV Batteries: A Sustainable Breakthrough

PFAS-Free EV Batteries: A Sustainable Breakthrough

Published 1 year, 2 months ago
Description

"U.S. researchers are developing electric vehicle batteries without the harmful 'forever chemicals' (PFAS) found in the cathodes and electrolytes of traditional batteries. These scientists from the University of Chicago have created a fluorine-free electrolyte that, in the lab, has demonstrated performance equal to or better than conventional batteries, including higher energy density and thermal stability. This research addresses the environmental and health risks associated with the improper disposal of EV batteries containing PFAS, proposing a more environmentally friendly solution from the design phase. The goal is to demonstrate that it is possible to produce high-performing batteries without the use of these persistent and potentially hazardous substances.
