Supernatural: Benson Musaev, SFX Artist | Interview
Description
Supernatural SFX artist Benson Musaev interview 🩸 It turns out “blood splooge” is the real industry term, and the man who helped make them spills the gooey secrets on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
Berly and LA sit down with Benson Musaev, a maker, sculptor, and fabricator who worked on Supernatural from roughly 2008 to 2014 with Toby Lindala’s effects shop. Today he does contract work for film and TV, teaches digital makeup in Vancouver, and runs his own custom silicone mask business, The Warlock Ronin.
Episode Highlights:
- Quitting animation school, buying polymer clay at Michaels, and cold-calling his way into creature effects
- “Splooge” is official effects lingo (Berly, vindicated), plus how the cannon John Emmet Tracy told the hosts about actually works
- The splooge wall, and the secret ingredient in the chunkiest ones (check your fruit bowl)
- Grocery runs for condoms, pantyhose, and fake blood, and the looks from the cashiers
- The magnetic resettable finger for Matt Frewer’s Pestilence, and the take where it stuck to the knife
- Edible gelatin body parts (they taste like marshmallows) for the Valentine’s Day episode
- The hidden tubes behind Eve’s death scene
- The turducken sandwich that nearly broke him: “We know how to make dead bodies, not fake sandwiches”
- Hammer of the Gods secrets: floating eyeballs, a magician’s head trick, and a rig borrowed from Final Destination
- The weirdest build of his career, a six-foot dream-sequence prop you’ll have to hear to believe
After the interview, LA wants a tour of the mask wall, Art the Clown included. Berly realizes the hosts have probably only been counting cannon splooges, not syringe splooges, so the real total could be triple.
“Years in doing effects, and a sandwich does me in.” – Benson Musaev
