Today, Larry goes one on onewith Thoroughbred Handicapper Brian Nadeau again ,who talks about today’s Stakes filled card at Gulfstream Park, which includes the running of the $1 Million Curlin Florida Derby and also a supporting undercard, with ten stakes races in total on the day. Brian also discusses why the Florida Derby remains so important to the Kentucky Derby trail and after making his selection in the Florida Derby, whether there may be a ‘sleeper play’ in the race and why.; Century Downs General Manager Jackie Morrison , who discusses the recent installion of lights at the track, which now allows for night racing at the track and talks about her role as General Manager and the plans for 10th Anniversary celebrations to take place next week at the Calgary racetrack.; Woodbine Trainer Mike De Paulo ,who discusses his recent 1,000th win as a Trainer and where the win took place and how it took so long for him to ‘taste’ victory. Mike also discusses his plans for the upcoming Woodbine Thoroughbred meet that begins on April 26th and why he became a Trainer in the first place.;
In our feature, ‘In Case You Missed It’ A Look At The Way It Was In Horse Racing News , Larry talks aboutthe recent announcement by Woodbine about anagreement in principle with the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association of Ontario (HBPA) on a new two-year deal for a purse increase.He also provides his ‘Ponies Picks of the Day’selections for several North American Racetracks,later on in the show and in our ‘Road Trip’ feature, he visits today’s Curlin Florida Derby Stakes atGulfstream Park,
● Brian initially talks about why the Florida Derby is such an important stop on the Kentucky Derby ‘road’ and talks about who he believes today’s race goes through. He also mentions whether we may see a ‘sleeper play’ in the Florida Derby as well and also discusses who he likes in some of the other Stakes events at Gulfstream Park today. Brian also discusses how the Championship Meet at Gulfstream ends on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean that Gulfstream is finished racing for the season- he explains why! ● Jackie talks about the recent installation of lights on theCentury Downs track and how night racing becomes a new way of selling the sport to new, potential racing fans. She also mentions how the track is celebrating their 10thAnniversary next week and what has been planned for the event and mentions whether the track has had any problems with horse supply. She also discusses the dates for their Standardbred and Thoroughbred/Quarter horse meets and says how she became part of Century Downs and now the General Manager and the importance of having good food and beverage available for the patrons, especially because they are being entertained for four hours.
● Mike talks about his recent 1000th win as a Trainer , where it took place and how it took longer than he planned. He also mentions some of the better horses that he has had an opportunity to Train and a couple of Trainers that he looked up to when he initially got into the business. Mike also discusses the upcoming Woodbine meet and how many horses he expects to be training over the season and if there still remains some races that he wants to win and why. He also talks about how Training horses has become a ‘family business’ and whether he has set any goals for his stable going forward at Woodbine this year.
