Chase what Matters: Leave a Legacy and Disciple Others

Published 1 year, 8 months ago
Description

What kind of legacy will your life leave? Drawing on Jesus’ command to make disciples in Matthew 28, Pastor Chris Teien considers how ordinary believers can help others know Christ and grow in faith. This message offers practical encouragement for anyone who wants to invest in people but wonders where to begin.

A lasting spiritual legacy grows as we follow Jesus and help others follow Him. We can start with people already in our lives, live as examples of faith, and share what we have learned with those who can pass it on. Jesus gives His followers this mission and promises to be with them as they carry it out.

“Chase What Matters” Message Series 3 of 4

IN THIS MESSAGE

#1 EMBRACE THE MISSION

After His resurrection, Jesus told His followers to make disciples, baptize them, and teach them to obey His commands. Discipleship is part of the mission He gave His church, and His promise to be with us gives us courage to take part. (Matthew 28:18-20)

#2 START WHERE YOU ARE

You can begin with a child, grandchild, friend, neighbor, coworker, or someone in your church. Look for an opportunity to share your faith and invest in a person God has already placed in your life. (Acts 1:8)

#3 LIVE THE MESSAGE

People learn from the way we live as well as from what we teach. Paul urged believers to follow his example as he followed Christ. That calls us to keep growing in faith and to live in a way that helps others see what following Jesus looks like. (1 Corinthians 11:1)

#4 INVEST IN FAITHFUL PEOPLE

Paul told Timothy to entrust what he had learned to trustworthy people who would be able to teach others. Spending time with someone, reading Scripture together, praying, and helping them grow can prepare that person to encourage others in turn. (2 Timothy 2:2)

#5 HELP OTHERS BEAR LASTING FRUIT

Jesus chose and appointed His followers to bear fruit that lasts. As we help people grow in Christ and equip them to serve, our investment can reach beyond the people we personally teach. (John 15:16)

Think of one person you could encourage in following Jesus. You do not need to know everything before you begin. Take a faithful step, depend on the Holy Spirit, and help that person grow in God’s Word.
