Finding Hope and Help for Depression *

Published 1 year ago
Description

Depression is a real and often complicated struggle that affects people from every walk of life, including faithful followers of Jesus. In this message, Pastor Chris Teien examines what the Bible says about discouragement and offers Christ-centered hope for those who are struggling and those who want to help them.

Depression should never be dismissed as simply a lack of faith. Its causes may be spiritual, emotional, physical, relational, or a combination of several factors. God can provide help through His Word, prayer, supportive relationships, healthy practices, qualified counseling, and appropriate medical care.

(Pastor Chris Teien originally preached this replay message in Belle Plaine, MN, in 2019.)

IN THIS MESSAGE

#1 UNDERSTAND DEPRESSION WITH BIBLICAL COMPASSION

Scripture shows that faithful servants of God, including Job, Moses, David, and Paul, experienced seasons of deep anguish and discouragement. Understanding that depression can have different causes helps us respond without shame, simplistic answers, or careless judgment. (Job 3; Psalm 13:2; Numbers 11:10-15; 2 Corinthians 1:8-9)

#2 SEEK GOD’S HELP THROUGH WISE AND PRACTICAL STEPS

God often provides help through Scripture, prayer, Christian friendship, healthy habits, wise counseling, and appropriate medical care. Believers can honestly confront grief, confess known sin, challenge discouraging thoughts with biblical truth, and trust God through every season. Seeking professional help is not a failure of faith. (Isaiah 41:10; Jeremiah 31:3; Ephesians 4:31; Philippians 4:8; 1 John 1:8-9)

#3 ENCOURAGE OTHERS WITH CHRIST’S COMFORT

Followers of Jesus are called to walk patiently beside people who struggle with depression. Rather than offering criticism or quick answers, we can listen carefully, pray faithfully, provide practical support, and point people toward the hope found in Christ. God can also use our past hardships to prepare us to comfort others. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4; Colossians 3:13; 1 Thessalonians 5:14-24)

Depression does not mean God has abandoned you. Bring your struggles honestly to the Lord, seek the help He provides, and trust His promises one day at a time. God remains near in life’s darkest seasons and can use His people to carry one another’s burdens.
