Matthew Hertgen, a 31-year-old from Princeton, New Jersey, was charged last month with the first-degree murder of his younger brother, 26-year-old Joseph Hertgen, a former University of Michigan soccer player.

The incident occurred on February 22, 2025, in a luxury apartment at the Michelle Mews complex near Princeton University. Matthew allegedly called 911 around 11:15 p.m., reporting a fire and a dead body. When police arrived, they found Joseph’s body with signs of blunt force trauma, lacerations, and a missing eye, alongside a gruesome scene involving a cup of blood and blood-smeared utensils.
