Welcome back to MJ English. You know, um sometimes like the simplest things in English can be kind of tricky.
Yeah.
And like today we're going to do a deep dive into "eat" and "have."
Uhhuh.
And you know, in Mandarin, there's only one word for both "eat" and "have."
I know a lot of Taiwanese speakers get confused by this because, you know, they're both translated with the same word.
Yeah. And it's like in Chinese, you eat breakfast, you eat lunch, you eat dinner, you eat snacks, right?
But, you know, sometimes we also say "have a meal." So when do we actually use "have"?
Okay, so let's start with "eat."
Okay, "eat" is really straightforward.
It means you're putting food in your mouth. You're chewing and you're swallowing.
Okay, like "I eat a hamburger."
比如說,「I eat a hamburger.(我吃漢堡)」。
Easy peasy.
Easy peasy.
So if "eat" is so simple, where does "have" fit in?
Well, "have" can be a little trickier. Like you said, we can "have a meal," right?
"Have" in this case is kind of like enjoying or experiencing the whole meal, not just the action of eating.
So it's like the bigger picture.
Exactly. Think of it this way.
Okay, you eat the food on your plate, but you have the whole experience of breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
H, that makes sense. So, "have" is for the whole experience. "Eat" is for the action, right?
But are there any other times when we use "have" instead of "eat"?
Absolutely.
Okay.
We often use "have" with drinks like "I have a cup of coffee every morning."
我們通常會用 "have" 來搭配飲料,例如「I have a cup of coffee every morning.(我每天早上喝一杯咖啡)」
Oh, yeah. You wouldn't say "I eat a cup of coffee," would you?
你不會說 "I eat a cup of coffee."(我吃一杯咖啡),對吧?
Right. It just sounds weird.
It just wouldn't sound natural.
You drink coffee, right? So, you "have" coffee. It's the same with tea, juice, water.
Okay. Anything you drink.
I'm starting to get this.
